Android 5.1 OTA update for Nexus: Everything you need to know about the new Android release

Along with the OTA update, Google has also uploaded the Android 5.1.1 factory images for the above mentioned devices along with the Nexus 7 (Wi-Fi and 3G variants). The OTA update for the Nexus 7 is yet to go live, but with the factory image available, it should not be far away now.

Android 5.1 OTA update for Nexus available

Of our many jobs here at Android Police, one is to make our readers' lives easier when we can. With that in mind, here's a roundup of every known Android 5.1 OTA for every Nexus device that will be receiving it. As new ones become available, this post will be updated accordingly. Android 5.1 will be released to Nexus 4, 5, 6, 7 (2012 and 2013), 9, and 10. As I'm sure you've guessed, there will be plenty of files to be had.

We only just announced that Google has made available the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop factory images for you to flash to your 2012 or 2013 Nexus 7 tablet and for your Nexus 10 Android tablet, but some Nexus 10 users are already receiving the OTA update on their devices.

The brand new Android 5.1.1 (build LMY48G) update for the Nexus 7 (2013) WiFi that first serviced via factory image earlier in the week is now available for download as an over-the-air .zip from Google. Yep, you can sideload this little guy as long as you are coming from LMY47V.

Android Lollipop (codenamed Android L during development) is the fifth major version of the Android mobile operating system developed by Google and the 12th version of Android, spanning versions between 5.0 and 5.1.1.[4] Unveiled on June 25, 2014 at the Google I/O 2014 conference, it became available through official over-the-air (OTA) updates on November 12, 2014, for select devices that run distributions of Android serviced by Google (such as Nexus and Google Play edition devices). Its source code was made available on November 3, 2014. The first phone with Android Lollipop was Nexus 6.

It will take some times to reach the Android 5.1 OTA (over the air) update notification on your Nexus 4. However, if you are excited to try the Android 5.1 Lollipop on your Nexus 4, you can install the OTA update manually. Folks over at XDA has captured the 5.1 OTA update (Build LMY47O) for nexus 4 and made available for download.

As expected, the update has become available for Nexus devices first, as Google has already released the update for its devices. One way of installing Android 5.1 Lollipop on your Nexus 5 is by downloading the OTA update. You can do so by going to Settings and checking for software updates.

The Nexus 6 shipped with Android 5.0, although it now has an upgrade to Android 5.1, which is available as an OTA update. Most of the changes are slight tweaks over Android 5.1, but there are some important differences. First, many Nexus 6 owners complained that performance deteriorated over time, but the Android 5.1 update seems to fix that, restoring the phone to its prime.

The first set of devices to run this new version of Android -- Nexus 6, Nexus 9, and Nexus Player -- will be available in early November. In the same timeframe, we'll also roll out the Android 5.0 update worldwide to Nexus 4, 5, 7 (2012 & 2013), and 10 devices, as well as to Google Play edition devices.

Starting today, you can publish your apps that are targeting Android 5.0 Lollipop to Google Play. In your app manifest, update android:targetSdkVersion to "21", test your app, and upload it to the Google Play Developer Console.

Starting November 3rd, Nexus 9 will be the first device available to consumers that will run Android 5.0. Therefore, it is a great time to publish on Google Play, once you've updated and tested your app. Even if your apps target earlier versions of Android, take a few moments to test them on the Android 5.0 system images, and publish any updates needed in advance of the Android 5.0 rollout.

Is Android 6.0 Marshmallow update available on your Android devices? Will you upgrade the current Android OS to Marshmallow? Android 6.0 is said to be the fastest OS so far, comparing with 5.x Lollipop. The information as we've received shows that users with big-brand Android smartphones and tablets like Samsung, LG, HTC, Sony and Nexus are now running on 6.0 Marshmallow OS. The taste is great, as they reported, except one intolerable problem that they lose contacts, photos, messages and other multimedia files by upgrade Lollipop to Marshmallow.

These are two ways to upgrade Android from Lollipop to 6.0 Marshmallow available at the moment. Hope you do a secure update with the help of EaseUS MobiSaver for Android and a complete update with the guide introduced above.

T-Mobile's dedicated page confirms that LG Google Nexus 4, LG Google Nexus 5, Motorola Google Nexus 6, Asus Google Nexus 7 (2013), and HTC Google Nexus 9 devices started receiving the update on Tuesday via OTA (over-the-air) over Wi-Fi only. The cellular operator notes that the new security update for Nexus devices will be available over cellular network at a later date. The pages also note that these are mandatory updates for the Nexus range. Apart from Android security enhancements, all the Nexus devices will also receive minor bug fixes. 2ff7e9595c
